  • Skies will darken when the Moon moves between Earth and Sun at 8.30am
  • It is first solar eclipse this century and will not happen for another decade
  • Observers should not look at Sun directly even if it is covered by clouds 
  • Standard sunglasses are not a substitute for proper filter viewing glasses 
  • It is feared risk to eyesight will be greater now everyone has a smart phone
  • Selfie fans will damage their sight by holding phones up to capture event 
  • View will be better the further north you are - best viewpoint is Isle of Lewis
